FORMED:
1991 initially to address the problems of social decline in the village and the need for health and community facilities.

POPULATION:
1,500 people with a considerable dependency on the fishing industry. 501 people or almost one third of the population work in fishing, 155 on a part time and 346 on a full time basis. This represents 25% of the total Northern Ireland employment in the industry.
While just 27% of the Northern Ireland fishing fleet exists in Portavogie, it is significant that 34% of the value of all of Northern Ireland's fish landings originate from Portavogie. This is comparable with the value of landings in Kilkeel which is home to 54% of the entire fleet.

PROJECTS UNDER FISHING VILLAGES PROGRAMME: Construction of four fish processing units at the Harbour; construction of a multipurpose facility in the centre of the village providing a tourism facility incorporating cafe and quality guesthouse accommodation, two retail units, a health suite; and a community centre; landscaping and environmental works on the site of the new building.

JOBS CREATED:
30 full time and 5 part time jobs through the fishing processing units, and the various facets of the community tourism facility.
