The County Down Coastline is a breathtaking sight offering panoramic waterscape views, with a wide range of activities on offer for both the individual and families to enjoy. These activities range from village festivals to a selection of watersports.

The land which compliments the coastal villages and towns provides an equally varied and diverse landscape embracing the magical Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, rolling hills, historic jewels linked to our ancient past, and unspoiled woodlands.

This panoramic backdrop provides many opportunities for outdoor visitor activities. The quaintness and scenic imagery present in the fishing villages of Down have always stimulated creativity through painting, poetry and interpretation.

Annalong and Kilkeel nestle at the foot of the Mourne Mountains which offer wonderful opportunities for climbing, and hiking. Uniquely for a Mountain range, the Mournes' high summits are grouped together in a compact area only 7 miles broad and 15 miles long containing twelve peaks over two thousand feet tall and including Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland's Highest Mountain.

The surrounding drumlins, forests, woods and coastal plains are idea for more gentle walks and cycling. The many "greenlanes" throughout the area have been developed and promoted as a series of integrated cycling routes which appeal to all ages and ability.

Ardglass and Portavogie are ideally positioned for the exploration of the natural varied habitats of Strangford Lough which gives rise to exceptionally rich and varied marine life.

Over 2000 marine animal and plant species have been found. The Exploris Aquarium on the way to Portavogie from Ardglass (across Strangford Lough on the Ferry) provides interpretation of the many species found and a visit here represents an excellent family expedition.

The tranquil landscape of County Down is also an ideal setting for horse riding, where you can meander through ribbons of trees, trot around lakes trapped by drumlins or ride at full gallop across miles of golden sands.

The very nature of the fishing villages and their coastal location means that waterbased activity is an obvious attraction.

From the shore you can take a small boat under expert tuition and head out to sea to experience the relaxation and drama of deep-sea-fishing. Coarse, game or sea angling are also available in the region.

In addition, Ardglass Marina offers excellent berthing facilities for up to 83 leisure craft throughout the year.

Ardglass Golf Course is one of the most scenic coastal Golf Courses in Ireland and combined with Kilkeel's championship parkland course and Kirkistown's excellent facilities close to Portavogie, opportunities are provided for multi-centre golfing breaks.
