The County Down Fishing Villages
Network was established to promote further community
led economic and social regeneration and co-operation
among Northern Ireland's four main fishing dependent
villages
of Portavogie,
Ardglass,
Annalong
and Kilkeel
 |
The
four villages
have benefited from major funding of almost
£6 million allocated under the Fishing
Villages Programme, an initiative promoted
by the Department of Agriculture and Rural
Development and the International Fund for
Ireland.
In parallel with EC development in the fishing
sector, the Fishing Villages Programme was
announced in 1994 with the main aim of stimulating
economic and social regeneration and encourage
and co-ordinate multi-sectoral initiatives
in Northern Ireland's key fishing villages |
The County Down Fishing Villages Network has
evolved from the substantial impact which the
Fishing Villages Programme has had on the County
Down community, and aims to underpin and develop
the regeneration work carried out by the four
community based groups
involved, building on the partnership links
fostered under the Programme.
